Jammu, Apr 21: Security has been significantly strengthened across Jammu and Kashmir as authorities prepare for the first anniversary of the April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, most of them tourists.
Officials said extensive precautionary measures are being put in place to ensure safety at sensitive locations throughout the Union Territory. Senior officers are conducting regular review meetings to finalise security plans, with particular attention being given to religious sites, popular tourist destinations and other key establishments.
The deadly incident occurred at the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, where 25 visitors and a local pony handler lost their lives. Following the attack, tourism in the region witnessed a sharp slowdown, prompting authorities to temporarily close several tourist spots as a safety measure. Many of these locations were gradually reopened after thorough security assessments.
In an effort to improve monitoring and visitor protection, a digital identification system using QR codes has been introduced for tourism-related workers in Pahalgam. Officials believe the system will help maintain better records and enhance overall security management.
Security agencies have also raised alert levels in districts located along the International Border, particularly in Kathua and Samba, following intelligence inputs about possible suspicious movement. Additional vigilance has been ordered at major religious destinations, including the revered Vaishno Devi Shrine.
Police and security personnel continue to maintain strict surveillance in border areas. During recent inspections, officers reviewed checkpoints and directed field staff to remain alert and ensure close coordination among different agencies responsible for maintaining law and order.
Authorities further stated that counter-terror operations have been intensified over the past year across several districts, including Kishtwar, Udhampur and Kathua, despite challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions. These operations have resulted in the elimination of numerous militants and have helped restrict their activities.
Officials noted that continuous deployments, including operations in high-altitude areas during winter, have limited militant movement. However, security forces remain cautious due to ongoing concerns about infiltration attempts along the International Border, and round-the-clock monitoring and search operations are being carried out based on intelligence inputs.
