Shopian, October 3: Police in South Kashmir’s Shopian have registered a case against a man accused of allegedly impersonating government officials on social media and using fake identities to deceive and defraud people.
The accused has been identified as Umer Shamaim Ganie, a resident of Meemandar area of Shopian.
According to the allegations, Ganie allegedly posed as officials associated with various government administrative offices through social media platforms. He is accused of using these false identities to establish contact with different individuals and allegedly deceive them through fraudulent representations.
The case also includes allegations of cheating and fraud, criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint, according to the police case details.
In connection with the allegations, FIR No. 207/2026 has been registered at Police Station Shopian under Sections 204, 318(2), 319(2), 351(2) and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police have initiated an investigation into the matter to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged impersonation, the extent of the fraud and whether other individuals were affected.
The allegations are subject to investigation, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
