MAY 5: On Monday, the Supreme Court deferred the hearing on a batch of petitions challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
The matter will be taken up on May 15 as the bench noted it will profoundly scrutinize the Government’s affidavit on the issue.
It is learnt that the current Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, will retire on May 13 and this Waqf issue will now be taken up by new bench helmed by Justice B.R. Gavai.
Also, Justice Gavai is scheduled to take oath as Chief Justice of India on May 14
Pertinent to mention, the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, got President Droupadi Murmu’s assent on April 5. Also, the bill was cleared in Lok Sabha with the support of 288 MPs and 232 against it. The Rajya Sabha saw 128 MPs voted in its favour and 95 members stood against it.
