Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Nalin Prabhat on Friday reviewed the prevailing security scenario, days after a policeman was shot dead by a terrorist while on duty at Lal Chowk in Anantnag.

Prabhat, the director general of police, chaired a security review meeting at PCR Kashmir here to assess the prevailing security scenario and other emerging challenges across the Union territory, a police spokesperson said.

The meeting was attended by senior officers of police from all wings of both regions — Jammu as well as Kashmir, including all district SSPs.

In the first terror attack targeting police personnel in the Kashmir valley this year, Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi who was on Amarnath Yatra security duty in South Kashmir’s Anantnag town was shot dead on Wednesday.

At the outset of the meeting on Friday, the participating officers presented a comprehensive assessment of the prevailing security scenario across the Union territory, including the current operational environment, threat perception and preparedness of field formations, the spokesperson said.

He said Prabhat directed the officers to intensify area domination and night domination, particularly in vulnerable and urban areas, to deter anti-national elements and maintain a strong police presence.

The DGP emphasised strengthening the security grid around critical infrastructure while reinforcing intelligence collection and coordination among all security and intelligence agencies, the spokesperson said.

Reviewing the counter-terrorism framework, the DGP instructed officers to intensify intelligence-led operations to identify, track and neutralise residual terror networks.

Prabhat stressed the importance of close coordination among all stakeholders to facilitate swift operational responses and effectively counter any attempt to disturb public order or undermine the security environment.

Highlighting the critical role of reliable communication in policing, the police chief stressed the need to ensure uninterrupted telecommunication connectivity and resilient communication networks across all police formations.

The DGP called for heightened situational awareness across all formations and directed officers to maintain continuous oversight of weather-related preparedness.

Prabhat also emphasised that communication networks and field-level coordination must remain fully operational to address any emergencies arising out of inclement weather.

The meeting concluded with the DGP urging all officers to remain mission-focused, vigilant and responsive, emphasising that coordinated action and sustained preparedness are essential to safeguarding peace and public confidence across the Union territory, the spokesperson said.
