Shopian, Apr 30: Two people were killed and another was critically injured after a steam boiler exploded at a cold storage unit in the Aglar Pinjura area of Shopian on Wednesday evening, officials said.
According to officials, the explosion took place at a cold storage facility in the local fruit mandi while repair work was being carried out on a boiler. The sudden blast left three engineers seriously injured.
All the injured were immediately shifted to District Hospital Shopian for medical treatment. One of them, identified as Saurabh Singh from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, died soon after being brought to the hospital.
Later during the night, another injured worker, Shiv Kumar, also succumbed to his injuries, raising the death toll to two. The third injured, Raj Kumar, is currently undergoing treatment and is reported to be in critical condition.
Preliminary information suggests that the explosion occurred while the boiler was under repair. Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.
