VDG Member Shot at UAV in Kanachak
Jammu: Security has been tightened in Jammu after two unusual incidents along the International Border — security forces captured a pigeon carrying a threat note to blow up the Jammu railway station, and locals reported sighting a suspected drone in a border area.
Officials said the pigeon, believed to have flown in from across the border, was caught in the Katmaria area of RS Pura around 9 pm on August 18. During inspection, a chit was found tied to its claws, carrying a threat message in Urdu and English. The note warned of an IED attack on the Jammu railway station with lines such as “Kashmir Freedom” and “Time has come.”
A senior police officer confirmed the recovery and said security agencies are taking the matter seriously given the prevailing threat perception and past anti-India designs from across the border. While Pakistan has earlier used balloons, flags, and pigeons to send messages across the IB, this is the first time a pigeon has been caught carrying a direct threat to a major installation.
“Whether this is an act of mischief or a well-planned conspiracy is being investigated. But in such matters, we cannot afford to take chances,” the officer said.
Security has since been stepped up at the railway station and along tracks. Dog squads and bomb disposal teams have been deployed, and local police remain on high alert.
Security experts believe the pigeon may have been specially trained and released with the message tied to its claws. “You have to take such matters seriously,” an expert noted.
In a separate incident, residents of the Gajansoo border area reported spotting a suspected drone on Thursday evening.
As per report drone was spotted hovering over the Ring Road in the Kanachak area.
Officials said Rajesh Sharma, a Village Defence Guard (VDG) member, first noticed the drone and even tried to shoot it down with his official weapon.
The drone later moved towards Gajansoo, after which he informed the police and Border Security Force. Acting on his input, security forces launched a massive search operation that continued till late hours.
Police and other security forces immediately launched a search operation in the area. Investigators are yet to establish whether the drone originated on the Indian side or was flown from across the border.
The International Border in Jammu district is guarded by the Border Security Force, and authorities remain vigilant as both drone activities and unconventional threats like the pigeon incident pose serious security concerns.
