JAMMU: Jambu Zoo, one of the largest zoos in North India, is undergoing an exciting transformation as part of its ambitious expansion plan.
Set in the Shivalik foothills, the zoo aims to become a world-class attraction for animal lovers and tourists alike. The zoo, which opened in May 2023, has already attracted over five lakh visitors in just two years.
With plans to enhance both its wildlife offerings and visitor experience, Jambu Zoo is poised to make a significant mark in the region’s tourism landscape.
A major component of the expansion includes the introduction of several new animal species. Visitors can expect to see a wide variety of animals, both native and exotic, such as Zebras, Rhinos, Sloth Bears, Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, and a variety of primates.
The zoo’s development plan also includes the addition of 11 new animal enclosures, which are scheduled for completion by December 2025. This expansion will not only diversify the animal collection but will also enhance the zoo’s appeal to a wider audience.
In addition to the wildlife, the zoo is planning several upgrades to improve the visitor experience. Nature trails, elevated walkways, and tree houses will allow guests to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.
The introduction of themed rest zones and a toy train for children will further enrich the visitor experience, making it a family-friendly destination. A smart zoo management system is also being implemented to streamline operations and ensure a high-quality experience for all visitors.
One of the most exciting additions will be the Fossil and Dinosaur Park, which aims to provide an educational and entertaining experience. With the addition of AR/VR technology, guests will be able to explore extinct species in a simulated environment, offering a unique and engaging way to learn about the history of wildlife. Supervised feeding sessions with select animals will also be introduced to further enhance visitor engagement.
To extend the zoo’s appeal and increase tourism, a Night Safari is also being planned. This addition will offer a new way to experience the zoo after dark and will be complemented by seasonal themed events, which will boost both footfall and revenue generation.
The zoo’s development was reviewed in a meeting chaired by Javed Ahmed Rana, the Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs. During the meeting, the Minister stressed the importance of animal welfare, urging officials to ensure that all species are provided with proper diet, nutrition, and healthcare in line with veterinary guidelines. He also emphasized the need for sustainable practices in the zoo’s expansion to ensure that it remains a world-class attraction for years to come.
Jambu Zoo, which spans 163 hectares, was inaugurated in 2016 with the vision of making it a major tourist destination along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Home to a diverse range of species including lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and deer, the zoo is set to become an even more significant player in North India’s tourism sector as it continues to evolve and expand.
