Crime against women: Over 26K cases registered in J&K in last eight years

3494 cases of crime against children, 50 of senior citizens registered from 2014-21

Jammu: Atrocities against women are on the rise in Jammu and Kashmir, as 26,520 cases have been registered under crime against women in the last eight years, while atrocities against children and senior citizens too are on the rise in the union territory. Compared to last year the crimes against women in J&K have recorded an increase of 15.62 percent.
MoS Home affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra in a written reply in Lok Sabha over crimes against children, senior citizens, and women in the country since 2014 onwards till date has divulged that so far 26, 520 cases have been registered under crime against women between the year 2014-21.
As per reply atrocities against women is on the rise in J&K, as 3327 cases were registered in 2014, 3366 cases were registered in 2015, 2850 in 2016, 3129 in 2017, 3437 in 2018, 3069 in 2019, 3405 in 2020, and 3937 in the year 2021. However, 27 such cases were registered in Ladakh in 2020 and 2021.
Moreover, 412 complaints of atrocities against women were received by the National Commission for Women (NCW) from Jammu and Kashmir during the last three years and the current year till March 8. Most of the cases NCW received were related to dowry, rape, and attempts to rape. As per the official data, in 2020, 79 complaints from J&K were received by NCW, followed by 157 in 2021. In the year 2022, NCW received 144 complaints and 32 till March 8.
Besides, the NRI Cell of National Commission for Women received 17 complaints related to violence against women from UT from 2020 till March. According to the 2011 census, there are 64 lakh women in Jammu and Kashmir and the crime rate per lakh population in 2021 stood at 61.6.
Also as per reply 3494 cases of crime against children were registered in J&K from 2014 to 2021, including 211 cases in 2014, 308 in 2015, 222 in 2016, 359 in 2017, 473 in 2018, 470 in 2019, 606 in 2020 and 845 cases were registered in the year 2021. Only three such cases were registered in Ladakh in 2020 and 2021.
The data also revealed that 50 cases of crime against senior citizen were registered in J&K from 2014 to 2021 with 80 per cent jump in 2021 from the preceding year.
“In three years from 2014 to 2016, no case was registered, while in 2017-one case, 2018-three cases, 2019-only one case, in 2020 five cases and in 2021- 40 such cases of crime against senior citizen were registered in J&K”, the reply said. Not even a single case of crime against senior citizen was registered in Ladakh in that eight year period.
The reply also said GoI has taken a number of initiatives for safety of women across the country including the Criminal Law (Amendment), Act 2013 was enacted for effective deterrence against sexual offences. Further, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2018 was enacted to prescribe even more stringent penal provisions including death penalty for rape of girls below the age of 12 years. The Act also inter-alia mandates completion of investigation and filing of chargesheet in rape cases in 2 months and trials to be completed in 2 months.
MHA has also approved two projects for setting up and strengthening of Women Help Desks in Police Stations and Anti-Human Trafficking Units in all districts of the country. In addition, Ministry of Home Affairs has issued Advisories to all States/Union Territories, from time to time to deal with crime against women. These advisories are available at www.mha.gov.in.
