SRINAGAR: Senior National Conference leader Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday filed his nominations to returning officer at the Deputy Commissioner's office here in Srinagar.
Mehdi travelled from his hometown, Budgam, to Srinagar with hundreds of his supporters in a car rally and reached the deputy commissioner's office.
In the afternoon, Mehdi filed the nomination papers and accompanied National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, Vice President Omar Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Vikar Rasool.
Speaking to the media after filing nominations, Mehdi said, “Through this election, I will speak on the decision made on 5th August 2019 to ensure that the entire country understands that the people of Jammu and Kashmir did not accept those decisions”.
Later, speaking at the party office, Mehdi voiced his opposition to the decision made in 2019, which he believes resulted in the deprivation of rights for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He was referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two union territories.
Mehdi said the NC is against this decision that was made on August 5, 2019. He reiterated the party’s commitment to advocating for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“National Conference aims to represent the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the Indian parliament, where their rights were curtailed in 2019, and advocate for the restoration of their special rights,” he said.
Surprisingly, Salman Sagar, a senior National Conference leader, has also filed the nomination for the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat. As per the reports, Sagar filed the nominations just after Syed Agha Hassan Ruhullah had done the same.
Reports suggest that Salman Sagar is the backup candidate of the National Conference. The decision was taken following the controversy over the Mian Altaf.
Reports had emerged that Mian Altaf won’t contest the election following bad health conditions. However, Mian cleared the air and said he is ready to fight elections. Earlier that day, Omar Abdullah had met Mian Altaf at his residence.
In his election affidavit, Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi declared his taxable income of Rs 5 94 500.
The affidavit revealed that Ruhullah owns the commercial building at Budgam, which has a market value of Rs 50 Lac, and a 5520 square feet building at Budgam, which has a market value of Rs 2.50 Crore. Further, Mehdi owns a Honda City and a Scorpio.
Mehdi has also disclosed that he has movable assets of Rs 37 lacs and immovable assets of Rs 3 Crore.
