Over 6,000 government schools in J&K sans drinking water, toilet facility

Jammu: At a time when education is switching over to the interactive mode and much is being propagated about adopting the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), over 6000 government schools in Jammu and Kashmir still lack the basic drinking water and toilet facility.
To a query seeking number of Government Schools without basic facilities of toilet, water tap, and drinking water across the country, the union education minister Dhamendra Pradhan in a written reply has shared that out of total 23, 173 government schools in Jammu and Kashmir 6238 schools lack drinking water and toilet facility.
“In Jammu and Kashmir there are 23,173 schools, out of which 1067 did not have toilets facility, 4431 tap water facility and 734 drinking facility”, the reply said.
While in aspirational districts of Baramulla and Kupwara out of total 3823 schools, 63 schools do not have toilet and tap water facility. Out of total 1978 schools in Barmaulla district- five are with toilet and 40 schools are with tap water facility. Similarly, out of out of total 1845 schools in Kupwara district-24 and without toilet facility, 423 without tap water facility and six schools are without basic drinking water facility.
Out of total 23, 173 government schools in Jammu and Kashmir, about 22,106 do have toilet facility including 19, 384 schools have boys toilet facility and 20,012 with girls toilet facility. The ratio of girls’ toilets to boys’ toilets in Government schools Jammu and Kashmir is 1.05.

In the last three years, the union government across the country has built 53,323 total toilets in government schools across the country under Samagra Shiksha programme, including 28,159 in 2019-20, 10,978 in 2020-21 and 14, 366 in 2012-22. 1344 toilets have been repaired in schools across the country including 1254 in 2020-21 and 90 in 2012-22. The GoI has spent total 1,05,591.29 on the building new toilets in schools and their repairs. In last three years the GoI has constructed 11,311 number water facilities in schools, including 5176 water facility in 2019-20, 4402 in 2020-21 and 1733 in 20121-22. The government has spent 18075 lakh for building the water facilities.
