Govt creates 1600 posts for 2 new GMCs, session to begin this year

Jammu: Aimed at strengthening the health and medical infrastructure particularly in the upcoming medical colleges, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has created more than 1600 posts for Udhampur and Handwara Medical Colleges.
The session in both these medical colleges is expected to begin soon this year.
Sources in the health department said that the government has expedited the process to make two new medical colleges in Udhampur and Handwara this year functional.
“The administration has also given approval for the creation of 1612 posts in the Health and Medical Education Department while the health administration departments will also open in both the medical colleges,” they added.
Sources revealed that 806 posts each have been created for 27 departments in the Government Medical College, Udhampur and Handwara.
In both the medical colleges, 15 posts are included in the department of Anatomy, 12 in Physiology, 12 in Biochemistry, 20 in Pathology, 13 in Microbiology, 10 in Pharmacology, 11 in Forensic Medicine, 40 in Community Medicine, sources added.
Apart from this, sources said that 26 in General Medicine, eight in TB and Respiratory Diseases, eight in Venereology and Leprosy, 21 in Psychiatry, 20 in Pediatrics and its subsidiary wing, 36 in General Surgery, 18 in Orthopedics, 15 in ENT Department, 14 in Ophthalmology Department, 25 in Gynecology Department, 25 in Radio Diagnosis, 13 in Radiotherapy, 24 in Anesthesia Department, 28 in Physical Medicine, 11 in Dentistry, 17 in Blood Bank, 14 in Hospital Administration, Central Record 15 in section, four in animal house, eight in library are to be created.
“Once the process of creation of these posts will be completed, the work on establishing both the medical colleges will be expedited,” sources said, adding that two years ago, the government had approved the opening of medical colleges in Handwara and Udhampur.
The estimated cost of a college is expected to be around 325 crores. Of this, Rs 115 crore will be spent on construction of a medical college, Rs 80 crore for student and faculty residences, Rs 70 crore on equipment and Rs 60 crore for upgrading the hospital.
“The process is already underway to start both the colleges. After the inspection by the team of National Medical Mission, both these colleges will start with the MBBS degree course this year,” a senior official of the Health and Medical Education Department said.
