Home Minister Amit Shah plants trees at Wahshari in Meghalaya as part of Sohra Afforestation Project

Jammu, July 25: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the second day of his visit at Meghalaya planted trees at Wahshari, Sohra erstwhile Cherrapunjee as part of the Sohra Afforestation Project for ecological restoration. The Union Minister was accompanied by DoNER Minister G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of States for DoNER BL Verma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and other officials of the State Government.
Speaking at the event, the Union Home Minister said that different paramilitary forces of the country will plant over 1 crore trees in the coming days and urged the people of the nation to assist the forces in the effort. He further said that Meghalaya Government along with the DoNER Ministry in association with the North Eastern Council will transform 100 hectares of barren land in Sohra into a forest with an estimated cost of 50 crore rupees.
In the next three years we will plant 1 million trees covering an area of 1000 hectares in the area, the Union Minister added. He was hopeful that under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma this project will be successful and once again Sohra (Cherrapunjee) will be known as the place receiving highest rainfall. He also exhorted that the war against global warming is not possible without active participation of local administration and local self government.
He also requested all the representatives of local governments to assist the paramilitary forces who are executing the task of tree plantation. The Minister appraised that an improved techniques has been adopted to transform barren lands into a lush forest which makes it possible to transform within a span of three years which he believes will be adding to the tourism prospect of Meghalaya and promote ecotourism.
Later the Union Home Minister inaugurated the Greater Sohra Water supply scheme constructed under thr DoNER Ministry at an estimated costs of about 25 crore rupees. He also visited Ram Krishna Mission, Sohra.
