Srinagar, April 18:Transporters across the Kashmir Division have announced a complete chakka jam on Monday to protest against the proposed extension of Smart City bus services to several districts, expressing apprehension that the move could adversely affect the local transport industry.
Representatives of the transport community voiced strong opposition to the plan, warning that the expansion of government-run bus services may threaten the income of thousands of families who rely on private transport operations for their livelihood.
They stated that private transport operators are already facing numerous operational and financial challenges, and the introduction of Smart City buses on district routes has added to the uncertainty within the sector.
The transport body has appealed to the administration to reconsider the proposal and initiate discussions with all concerned stakeholders to find a balanced and workable solution.
Transporters further announced that services across the Valley will remain suspended on Monday as part of the protest. They also sought cooperation from the general public and urged authorities to take timely measures to minimise inconvenience to commuters.
