September, 22:The second day of the autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed a discussion over government holidays after Anantnag West MLA Abdul Majeed Larmi raised the issue in the House.
Larmi pointed out that September 23 is observed as a holiday to mark the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh. He urged the government to also declare a holiday on the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
He further argued that if a holiday for Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah is not granted, the holiday marking Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary should also be reconsidered.
The statement drew objections from BJP MLAs, who questioned the demand to withdraw the holiday observed on Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary.
PDP MLA Waheed Para also joined the discussion, saying the sentiments of the people should be taken into consideration. He supported the demand for a holiday on Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s birth anniversary and also called for recognition of July 13 as a martyrs’ day.
September 23 is currently included in the Assembly’s provisional calendar as a holiday marking Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary.
The discussion took place as the House resumed proceedings for the second day of the autumn session.
