JAMMU: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has disposed of a five-year-old public interest litigation (PIL) seeking modernization of cremation grounds in Jammu, including Jogi Gate.
The PIL was filed in 2020 by advocate Sumit Nayyar, who had sought directions to authorities for improving infrastructure and facilities at cremation sites. Over the years, the court monitored the matter, issuing directions for status reports and progress affidavits.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal observed that the litigation had “substantially served its purpose,” as several works had already been executed in line with the court’s orders.
During the hearing, the petitioner conceded that, given the compliance reports and works carried out, nothing substantive remained pending. He, however, requested liberty to approach the court again in case of any fresh cause of action.
The Bench accepted the submission, formally closed the proceedings, and granted liberty to the petitioner to either seek restoration of the PIL or file a fresh petition in the future if new issues arise.
