JAMMU: Raising serious concerns over the increasing crime rate in the region, Former Mayor of Jammu Rajinder Sharma, said that the people of Jammu are alarmed by the deteriorating law and order situation.
Addressing a press conference near the Maharaja Hari Singh Statue, he highlighted that despite the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s proven capabilities in tackling militancy, their failure to curb growing criminal activities is a matter of serious concern.
Sharma attributed the rising crime to unchecked land encroachments and illegal mining, alleging that land and mining mafias are fueling unlawful activities, especially in areas like Supwal, Vijaypur, Gole Nala, and the Ring Road region, where government and custodian lands are being illegally occupied.
He urged the government to issue a White Paper to identify and demarcate government-owned, custodian, and disputed lands in Jammu district. He also called for immediate action to identify and punish those responsible for illegal encroachments and mining.
The former mayor, along with corporators, announced plans to meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha soon to discuss the issue and demand strict measures to restore law and order in Jammu.
“This issue concerns society as a whole and should be discussed openly, not behind closed doors. The government must take swift action to ensure the security and stability of Jammu,” Sharma stated.
