Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an intensified multi-layered crackdown on drug trafficking on Thursday, with authorities combining strict enforcement action, technological surveillance, and community outreach under the ongoing “Nasha Mukt Abhiyan”.

In Jammu, the administration demolished three houses belonging to alleged drug peddlers in the Rajiv Nagar area, officials said. The action was carried out amid heavy deployment of police and CRPF personnel. Authorities claimed the structures were built using proceeds from drug trafficking.

A senior official said the drive is part of an ongoing campaign against notorious drug networks.

“We had conducted a similar drive earlier as well. Some more drug peddlers have been identified and are currently absconding. The illegal structures constructed from money earned through the drug trade are being demolished,” he said, adding that three structures were razed during the operation.

The official further said drug-related activities were damaging society and youth, and the administration aims to channel young people towards sports and positive engagement.

In a separate action in Samba district, police arrested three alleged drug peddlers during a naka checking operation on the Vijaypur link road towards Rakh Barotian. Heroin-like substance was recovered from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Rahul Sharma, Sanju Bhagat, and Nirmal Kumar, all residents of Jammu. Police said the contraband and the vehicle used were seized, and a case has been registered under relevant sections at Vijaypur police station.

Meanwhile, in Shopian district, police have deployed a narcotic dog squad to strengthen anti-drug operations. Officials said trained sniffer dogs are being used at multiple checkpoints to detect concealed narcotics and assist in identifying individuals involved in drug trafficking.

The canine unit, deployed in coordination with the CRPF, is part of intensified surveillance efforts aimed at disrupting narcotics supply chains and acting as a deterrent to drug peddlers. Authorities also confirmed that strict vehicle checking operations are being carried out at designated naka points.

Adding a strong community dimension to the campaign, mosque imams and management committees in Anantnag district have joined the anti-drug initiative. During congregational prayers and public announcements, religious leaders urged people to support the “war on drugs” and refrain from involvement in illegal narcotics cultivation such as cannabis and opium poppy.

Officials said the religious appeals highlighted the social, moral, and legal consequences of drug abuse, while encouraging families and communities to report illegal activities to authorities. The police appreciated the role of religious institutions, calling it a strong example of public participation in the campaign.

Officials said the coordinated enforcement and awareness efforts are expected to significantly strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and help dismantle illegal networks across the region.
