Jammu: Security forces were engaged in two separate operations in Jammu and Kashmir, with Army troops exchanging fire with suspected infiltrators in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district and a joint team destroying an improvised explosive device (IED) recovered from a hideout in Rajouri, officials said.
In Kupwara, a brief encounter broke out early Saturday after Army troops detected suspicious movement near Jamgund village in the Keran sector along the Line of Control (LoC).
Officials said soldiers on patrol noticed the movement around 3 am and challenged the suspected infiltrators, triggering an exchange of fire.
Following the encounter, security forces expanded the search into adjoining forest areas to determine whether any infiltrators had managed to cross into the Valley. Additional troops joined the operation, which was underway when the report was filed.
The identity and whereabouts of the suspected infiltrators remained unclear. It was also not immediately known whether anyone had crossed the LoC. The Army had not issued an official statement on the incident.
In a separate operation in Rajouri district, security forces on Friday destroyed an IED recovered from an old terrorist hideout in the Thungwali area of Kandi.
Officials said joint teams of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, assisted by intelligence agencies, launched an anti-terror operation in the area, during which the hideout was busted.
An IED was recovered during searches and subsequently destroyed through a controlled explosion, officials said.
Search operations in the area were continuing when last reports were received.
