Srinagar: Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday arrived in Srinagar on a three-day official visit to Jammu and Kashmir, with a focus on strengthening grassroots-level electoral engagement and reviewing ongoing election-related initiatives in the Union Territory.
During his visit, the CEC will undertake a series of programmes across the Valley aimed at direct interaction with voters, Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and other electoral stakeholders, besides assessing field-level preparedness and administrative coordination in the electoral system.
Upon arrival at Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport, he was received by Chief Electoral Officer J&K Sanjeev Verma, Deputy Commissioner Budgam Athar Amir and other senior officials from the administration and Election Department.
Speaking to media persons at the airport, Gyanesh Kumar emphasised that the Election Commission’s focus remains on strengthening its connect with voters at the grassroots level and empowering field functionaries who form the backbone of the electoral process.
“I will be interacting with the voters across the beautiful valleys of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly with the grassroots-level Booth Level Officers of Budgam district, who serve as the cornerstone of the Election Commission,” he said.
He said that his engagement during the visit will include detailed interaction with voters and BLOs, especially in Budgam district, where a major review and outreach programme is scheduled on Monday.
Officials said the visit is part of the Election Commission of India’s continued efforts to enhance voter participation, strengthen electoral awareness and improve institutional preparedness through direct field-level engagement.
Jammu and Kashmir presents a complex electoral environment shaped by difficult terrain, scattered habitation, security considerations and logistical challenges in remote areas, requiring close coordination between election machinery and security agencies.
Officials noted that ensuring voter participation, maintaining accurate electoral rolls, addressing migration-related issues, and improving accessibility for elderly and differently-abled voters remain key focus areas for the Commission.
Against this backdrop, the CEC’s emphasis on direct interaction with BLOs assumes significance, as these field-level officials play a crucial role in voter registration, roll verification and ensuring smooth conduct of elections at the grassroots level.
The three-day visit is expected to further strengthen coordination between the Election Commission, field officials and voters, reinforcing efforts to promote inclusive and participatory democracy in the Union Territory.
