Srinagar, May 15:WBJP workers on Friday staged a protest in Srinagar demanding a complete ban on liquor sales in Kashmir and the closure of wine shops across the Valley.
The protest march started from the Ram Munshibagh area in Sonwar and moved towards Gupkar Road. Protesters raised slogans against the ruling government, alleging that liquor sales were being encouraged despite opposition from different sections of society.
Police later stopped the march before the protesters could proceed further towards Gupkar.
During the protest, party leaders said the issue was linked to the social and cultural values of Kashmir and claimed that people in the Valley have consistently opposed liquor sales.
They also stated that tourists visit Kashmir for its natural beauty, culture and hospitality, not for alcohol consumption.
The protesters said their campaign against liquor sales would continue until concrete steps are taken to shut wine shops across Kashmir.
