New Delhi: The BJP on Wednesday welcomed the reduction in commercial LPG prices, saying the decision reflects the Modi government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ interests despite global uncertainties.
The remarks came after oil marketing companies cut the price of commercial LPG by Rs 183.50 per 19-kg cylinder, the first reduction this year.
Commercial LPG will now cost Rs 2,930 per cylinder after touching a record Rs 3,113 last month as geopolitical tensions pushed up crude oil prices.
Alongside, the price of the 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder is reduced by Rs 13 to Rs 808.50.
Prices of domestic 14.2-kg LPG cylinders are left unchanged at Rs 942.
BJP national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said that even when the Iran-Israel-US conflict and tensions in the Gulf region disrupted global energy markets, India was largely shielded from a sharp increase in fuel prices because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “prudent policies”.
“When the Iran-Israel-America war took place and the entire Gulf region got involved, the Strait of Hormuz was closed. Petrol, diesel and gas prices doubled in many countries. Even then, because of the prime minister’s prudent policies, prices in India did not increase significantly,” he told PTI Videos.
Welcoming the latest cut in commercial LPG prices, Hussain said the opposition has been vocal when prices had risen but is unlikely to acknowledge the reduction.
“Opposition leaders had a lot to say when prices had gone up. Now that prices have come down, will they welcome the decision? They may not show such generosity,” he said.
“The prime minister is concerned about the people of the country and every citizen. Keeping their interests in mind, our government has taken this decision,” Hussain added.
