Jammu: In a significant development for the legal fraternity, the Supreme Court of India has designated seven retired High Court judges as Senior Advocates, including Justice Vinod Chatterji Koul, former judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The decision was taken during a full court meeting held on March 18 under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant.
An official notification issued on Thursday confirmed that the designations come into effect immediately.
Justice Koul’s inclusion has been welcomed in legal circles across Jammu and Kashmir, where he is known for his judicial acumen and contribution to the bench during his tenure.
Apart from Justice Koul, the other retired judges designated as Senior Advocates include Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal (Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice Harsha Nathalal Devani (Gujarat High Court), Justice M.S. Ramesh (Madras High Court), Justice Mauna M. Bhatt (Gujarat High Court), Justice R.N. Manjula (Madras High Court), and Justice Umesh Chandra Dhyani (Uttarakhand High Court).
The designation of Senior Advocate is a mark of distinction conferred upon advocates who have demonstrated exceptional legal expertise, standing, and contribution to the field of law.
The move is seen as recognition of the rich experience and judicial insight these former judges bring to the legal profession, further strengthening advocacy at the highest level.
