Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi and discussed measures to strengthen rail connectivity in the Union Territory, including the augmentation of train services to Kashmir and improved passenger facilities.
A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to introduce a commercial stoppage for the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag, a move expected to benefit commuters, tourists and traders across south Kashmir.
According to an official statement, the Chief Minister appreciated the quality of service and punctuality of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express and sought additional railway services for the Valley, particularly in view of the scheduled closure of Srinagar International Airport from October 1 to October 16 for mandatory runway maintenance and repair works.
The new Vande Bharat halt at Anantnag was announced during the meeting between the two leaders. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the decision reflects the Centre’s commitment to addressing local aspirations and strengthening connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister welcomed the move and said the Vande Bharat service has transformed travel between Jammu and Srinagar by significantly reducing travel time while providing world-class travel facilities to passengers.
During the discussions, Omar Abdullah also highlighted the growing role of the railway network in supporting Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. He noted that rail connectivity has facilitated the efficient transportation of key commodities, particularly horticulture produce such as apples and cherries, as well as cement and other essential goods.
He said the expanding rail network has helped reduce logistics costs, improved market access for farmers and traders, and strengthened economic linkages between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country.
Railway Minister Vaishnaw reiterated the Government of India’s commitment to the holistic development of Jammu and Kashmir through modern infrastructure and enhanced transportation facilities. He assured continued support for railway projects aimed at improving mobility, boosting tourism and facilitating trade in the region.
The meeting also focused on ensuring adequate rail connectivity during the temporary shutdown of Srinagar Airport in October, when a significant increase in passenger demand on railway services is expected.
Officials said the enhanced rail connectivity and the new Vande Bharat stoppage at Anantnag are expected to further improve transportation options for residents, tourists and businesses across the Kashmir Valley.
