Jammu: In a dramatic twist to the sensational daylight murder of Shri Kumar Medical Hall cashier Janaki (Janki) Das, the two accused arrested in the case allegedly attempted to escape from police custody while being taken from Jammu to Chandigarh, prompting the police to open fire and injure both in their legs.
According to reports, the accused—Aryan Sharma, son of Amarjeet Sharma of Shiva Colony, Gangyal, Jammu, and Sunny Mehra of Bhadori, Bari Brahmana—were being transported to Chandigarh after their arrest from the Ramgarh area of Samba district in a joint operation by Chandigarh Crime Branch and Jammu & Kashmir Police.
Police said that during transit, both accused allegedly attempted to flee custody. In response, the escort team opened fire in self-defence and to prevent their escape, hitting both accused in their legs.
They were immediately shifted to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, Chandigarh, where doctors stated that both are out of danger.
Official sources said a Chandigarh Crime Branch team, led by Inspector Narinder Patyal, conducted raids at their respective residence in Gangyal and Bari Brahmana on June 17 and finally overpowered them from Ramgarh before transporting them to Chandigarh.
The case relates to the shocking murder of Janaki Das, cashier at Shri Kumar Medical Hall in Chandigarh’s Sector 11, who was gunned down in broad daylight on June 13. CCTV footage showed two masked assailants entering the busy medical store and firing 13 rounds at close range before fleeing with the help of a third accomplice waiting outside. The attack triggered panic across the city and led to a massive manhunt by Chandigarh Police.
Aryan and Sunny are suspected to be among the shooters involved in the high-profile murder, though the motive behind the killing remains under investigation. Police are probing all possible angles, including organised crime and previous threats linked to the medical store.
The firing during the accused’s alleged escape attempt has now added another dramatic chapter to one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in the region. Authorities have not disclosed further operational details, while the investigation into both the murder and the escape attempt is continuing.
