Jammu: MLA Shabir Kullay suggested that the monthly salary for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) should be increased to ₹5 lakh.
He emphasized that this amount is justified for those who work honestly and dedicatedly for the welfare of the people.
While speaking to the media, Shabir Kullay elaborated on the financial challenges faced by MLAs.
He pointed out that a significant portion of their expenses is spent on travel, accommodation, and public service activities.
According to him, MLAs often travel around 20,000 kilometers per month, resulting in substantial fuel expenses that can go up to ₹1 lakh.
Additionally, expenses related to food, lodging, and other services further add to the financial burden, amounting to nearly ₹2 lakh monthly.
Kullay highlighted that earlier, MLAs were provided with certain facilities such as accommodation at Circuit Houses for a nominal fee. However, this cost has now increased significantly.
“Previously, MLAs were charged ₹200 per night at Circuit Houses, but now they are required to pay ₹1,500 per night,” he remarked, emphasizing that these costs are no longer reimbursed by the government.
Kullay also voiced concern for daily-rated workers, advocating for their regularization and improved wages. He stressed that ensuring fair salaries for all workers is crucial for maintaining justice and motivating those who contribute to public service.
He further mentioned that his proposal for the salary hike was presented as a suggestion during the budget session and is yet to be finalized.
