88% of households tap connections installed; govt’s deadline for completion is set for March 31, 2025

SRINAGAR: Chief Engineer, Kashmir PHE Jal Shakti Department, Braham Jyoti Sharma, today said that the Jal Shakti Department has covered 88 percent of households that have been provided tap water under the Har Ghar Jal Yojana scheme.
Speaking to The News Now, Sharma said that 88 percent of tap water connections have been completed under the Har Ghar Jal Yojana scheme so far.
“Under Jal Jeevan Mission the department is monitoring the working and implementation of schemes from centre and state levels. The work is under progress and 88 percent of task under Household Tap Connection (HTC) is completed, while the rest is underway,” he said.
Sometimes, weather conditions slow down or halt progress for a few days, but the government’s fixed timeline is March 31, 2025. He said that through your platform, I want to inform the public and media that we will complete this by the set deadline.
Regarding the issue of water scarcity, we acknowledge that resources are depleting, as river and stream water levels have dropped. The department, however, ensures water supply by using technical methods like diversions or lowering extraction points where necessary, he said.
Adding that he said despite last year’s dry spell, the department has successfully managed supply without causing distress to the public. Additionally, the public has cooperated with us, helping in our efforts to maintain water distribution.
On the topic of judicious water use, as we approach summer and spring, consumption will increase. Discussions are ongoing about installing water meters, but initially, the department will begin with commercial connections. Gradually, as per government directives, we will move forward with implementation, he said.
As for remote and hilly areas, Jal Jeevan Mission is not just for easily accessible regions but also for far-flung areas. We are committed to ensuring that every household receives tap water under this initiative, Sharma said.
