New Delhi, September 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his congratulations to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after she achieved the distinction of becoming Italy’s longest continuously serving postwar prime minister.

Modi said Meloni’s achievement demonstrated the confidence and trust placed in her leadership by the people of Italy.

Meloni, 49, took office as Italy’s prime minister on October 22, 2022. After completing 1,413 uninterrupted days in office on Thursday, she surpassed the previous record for continuous service as prime minister since the end of World War II. She is also Italy’s first woman prime minister.

Taking to X, Modi wrote, “Congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy’s postwar history. This milestone is a reflection of the trust and confidence of the Italian people in her leadership.”

The Indian prime minister also highlighted Meloni’s role in deepening bilateral ties, saying her friendship had contributed to strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership.

He added that he looked forward to maintaining close cooperation with Meloni to work towards a prosperous future for the people of both nations.

“My best wishes for her continued success in the years ahead,” Modi said.

Modi also holds a record in India. On June 10, 2026, he became the country’s longest continuously serving elected prime minister after completing 4,399 consecutive days in office.
