AUG 8: With just a day left to auspicious Raksha Bandhan festival, markets in Jammu are fully decked up and witnessing massive footfall of shoppers.
Several markets, for instance: Raghunath Bazaar, Parade Market, Hari Market, Gole Market and other areas are buzzing with colourful rakhis and miscellaneous kites. Besides, sweet shops, and many gift stores are flooded with people busy shopping for the pious day.
Raksha Bandhan, celebrated annually in the Shravana month during the full moon day, symbolizes the love between brother and sister wherein sister ties sacred thread (Rakhi) on the wrist of her brother as mark to safeguard her from all atrocities in life.
The shoppers (from all walks of life), while speaking to The NEWS NOW (TNN), outlined the significance of this festival and said it also reinforces the bond of siblings. Some buyers highlighted the importance of this year’s festival especially after “Operation Sindoor” as they said, “We survived the Indo-Pak war and attributed the success to Indian Armed Forces.”
The business community of Raghunath Bazar and Parade Market said that this year the festival of joy and mutual brotherhood (Raksha Bandhan) has been pivotal in paddling their businesses and making their pockets deeper.
Earlier in the day, girls from various schools were witnessed tying rakhi to Central Industrial Security Force jawans and Border Security Force personnel in Jammu as a testament for shielding them during the India-Pakistan war of 2025.
Pertinent to mention, when Lord Krishna hurts his finger in battle, Draupadi tears her sari to cover his wound. Lord Krishna gets overwhelmed with gratitude by this act of affection and states to repay her in some way. Krishna keeps his word and gallantly rescues Draupadi in a time of need. This story is regarded the orgin of Raksha Bandhan (Knot of Protection).
Raksha Bandhan is not one community affair, however, an overwhelming engagement across all the sects of society.
