Srinagar: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has identified eight IPS vacancies for induction from the Jammu & Kashmir segment of the joint AGMUT cadre.

According to a letter, the MHA has determined a total of eight vacancies for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 for appointment in IPS by promotion. “ ……In terms of the provisions contained in Rule 4 (2) of the IPS  Recruitment Rules, 1954 read with Regulation 5(1) of IPS (Appointment by  Promotion) Regulations, 1955, 05 vacancies are re-determined for the Select  List 2021, 00 vacancy for the Select List 2022, 02 vacancies for Select List  2023 and 01 vacancy for Select List 2024 are determined in respect of the Jammu and Kashmir Segment of Joint AGMUT Cadre,” reads the letter by MHA to UT division of the ministry and Union Public Service Commission.

J&K police is under direct control of MHA after erstwhile state of J&K was downgraded into UT.

The MHA, in the letter, states that five unfilled vacancies of select lists of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 have been carried forward and re-determined for the year 2021.

These vacancies have been re-determined as against 32 vacancies, 27 appointments were notified in IPS cadre of the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir on September 29, 2023. The selection committee meeting (SCM) for these appointments was held on July 21, 2023.

According to the communique, three vacancies have been determined for 2023 and 2024 due to the retirement of an equal number of IPS officers.

The Ministry has directed its Union Territory division and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to take further necessary action as required under the IPS Promotion Regulations.

In 2021, the Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2021 to merge Jammu and Kashmir cadre of All India Service (IAS, IPS and IFoS) with the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territory) cadre.
