Solid Waste Management: DLSA Jammu hosts legal awareness camp for students

JAMMU NOVEMBER 07: District Legal Services Authority Jammu and Jammu Municipal Corporation today jointly organized a Legal Awareness programme on Conservation of Environment, Say No to the Use of Plastic/Polythene with the objective to make Jammu Clean, Green and Beautiful, here at Government Higher Secondary School, Bhalwal.
The programme was organized under the aegis of J&K State Legal services Authority which was attended by Students, Teaching and Non Teaching staff members, Para Legal Volunteers, members of Civil Society and officers of Jammu Municipal Corporation.
The main objective of the Programme was to educate the students about the need and importance of keeping our surroundings neat and clean and adopting various methods for implementing Solid Waste Management by Laws and Rules, and Say No to the single use of Plastic/ Polythene in their day to day life for a healthy environment.
Secretary DLSA Jammu, Naushad Ahmed Khan and Dr. Zaffar Iqbal, Nodal Officer, Solid Waste Management, Jammu Municipal Corporation during their interaction made the students aware about the hazardous impacts of Single use Plastic/Polythene in the day to day life and urged the students to make Solid Waste Management a Public movement and collection of Single use of Plastic/polythene from their respective homes for the proper segregation.
Dr. Zaffar Iqbal and Advocate Jyoti Sharma, Master trainer elaborated on the ways and means to manage the Solid Waste and also urged the gathering to implement them in their homes, schools, villages etc and further said that the students which will collect the maximum waste material will be called as “Green Champaions”. It is our moral duty to ban single use plastic items such as straws, forks, knives, and cotton buds from our day to day life in order to maintain the quality of life on this beautiful planet, advocate Jyoti Sharma added. She also laid stress upon the importance of Solid waste management from its inception to final disposal, prevent littering and to promote the use of eco-friendly jute carry bags discarding the use of plastic. An interactive session was also held with the students in which their queries were sorted.
Those who spoke on the occasion were Principal Dr. Kishore Sharma, Mrs. Anajana Kumari, & Mrs Priya Jitendra faculty members, Ms. Sonia, Ms. Isha & Shumbam students of the above said School also explained in detail about the importance of Solid Waste Management, Cleanliness and ill effects of single use of Plastic/Polythene to our environment.
The programme culminated with a Pledge “Say No to the use of Polythene bags, use Renewable cotton jute bags”, “Discard the one time use of Plastic bottles/ other plastic materials”, Don’t litter “Keep your Surroundings neat and clean”, “Take Steps for minimizing the generation of Solid Waste”, “Don’t Pollute water bodies”, “Let us keep River Tawi and Ranbir Canal neat & clean”, “Plant more and more trees to counter the environmental crisis”, and “Obey model Solid waste Management by Laws”.
