Dr. S P Vaid - A Hero in Uniform and his Unique Salute Style

Have you ever seen Dr. S P Vaid who is currently serving as Director General of Police of State saluting?

Well, if you have, you have observed he has this distinctive style. He salutes with 3 fingers and that’s because he has lost one of his fingers while fighting with terrorists in Kashmir.

Sheesh Paul Vaid who joined Indian Police Service in the year 1986 as Additional Superintendent of Police in Badgam and recipient of several medals including President's Police Medal for distinguished service, Indian Police Medal for gallantry, Police Medal for meritorious service, Indian Army Chief's citation and Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak by the Home Ministry is known for his incredible acts of bravery. An insane the number of assassination attempt has been made on him and his family since the time he joined Jammu and Kashmir Police but once did Dr, Vaid cow down to militants!

Let’s go down memory lane a little. In 1999 when Dr. Vaid was posted as DIG Jammu-Kathua Range. In March that year, Dr. Vaid one day was travelling to Baramulla after a review meeting at Srinagar where he was officiating as Inspector General. He was travelling in his bullet proof car and there were two escort gypsies travelling along when a group of over two dozen militants ambushed his vehicle. Knowing that the vehicle he is travelling in, is a bullet proof one, the militants hurled hand-grenades and used powerful universal machine guns which pierce through bullet-proof glass, instead of the commonly used AK-47s.

Due to the intensity of firepower drawn on the Bullet Proof Car, the windscreens shattered. In order to shield his body, Dr. Vaid put out his right hand, which took a hail of bullets.

After the incident, Dr. Vaid was admitted in Baramulla hospital, with a smashed right hand and bullets lodged in the skull. Later he was shifted to Delhi for treatment. The doctors in Delhi retrieved tissues from near his collar bone and implanted these in his hand, hoping that he will be able to use most of his hand properly. Like all invincible action heroes, Dr. Vaid completely recovered from his injuries but his little finger was permanently damaged. And that’s when he started saluting with three fingers because one he lost for country.

If that’s not an inspiring Lifetime movie in the making, we don’t know what is.
