Detainee charged with rape dies after recovering from COVID-19 in Kupwara

Srinagar, June 14: A 37-year-old rape accused from Brath Kalan area of Sopore of north Kashmir's Baramulla and lodged in a jail in neighboring Kupwara district died on way to the hospital this morning after recovering from COVID-19, officials said.

As per news agency, Lateef Ahmed Mir, son of Hamza Mir was arrested in case FIR No 15/2021 under section 376 (rape), 342 (wrong confinement) registered at Police Station Sopore.

Mir was under judicial custody in district jail Kupwara from February 5 as per officials.

While in custody, he was under quarantine after testing COVID-19 positive, however his test had returned negative of late, officials added.

Superintendent of Kupwara Jail, Shahbaz Hussain told Greater Kashmir that Mir needed hospitalization this morning.

However, he died on way to Sub-district Hospital Kupwara, Hussain added.
