Four drug peddlers arrested, contraband recovered in Kashmir

Srinagar: Police claimed to have arrested four drug peddlers and recovered huge cache of contraband in separate incidents in Kashmir valley.

A police spokesperson said that following specific information, a checkpoint was established at Lal Chowk area in south Kashmir district of Anantnag. "Police intercepted one person at the checkpoint and during checking, recovered 50 bottles of Welcyrex," he said.

He said the accused, identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Ganai, was immediately taken into custody.

He said that following specific input, a police team along with Executive Magistrate raided the house of one Sajad Ahmad Bhat at Arwani in Anantnag. "During checking, police seized 330 bottles of Welcyrex from the house,” he said.

“The whole operation was conducted under the supervision and directions of SSP Anantnag. He has assured that such operations will continue in future with same vigour and zeal by Police and drug peddlers will be dealt with heavy hand,” the spokesperson said.

In Bandipora, a checkpoint was established by at Kaloosa in north Kashmir district of Bandipora. "Police intercepted a person at the checkpoint and during checking recovered large consignment of Charas and Clonzepam tablets," he said.

He said the accused, identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, was immediately taken into custody. “Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Bandipora and further investigation has been initiated,” he said.

He said police in Sopore arrested a drug peddler at a checkpoint established at Achabal Chowk and recovered 40 grams of charas and illicit liquor from him. “The accused has been identified as Muhammad Altaf Lone,” he said.

He said a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Sopore and investigation initiated.

He said community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding anti-social elements in their neighbourhood, adding persons found indulging in anti-social activities will be dealt as per law.

“Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace as reiterated in our community meetings,” he added.
