DESILTING WORK OF RANBIR CANAL IN ARNIA AND R S PURA SECTOR BY BSF JAMMU

Ranbir canal is the major source of irrigation for farmers in Jammu Region. Constructed in 1905, it is considered to be the lifeline of Jammu. Total length of canal is 59.55 kms and it was the game changing project which laid the foundation of rapid transformation of rural agricultural economy in Jammu. The famous basmati rice of R S pura owes its cultivation primarily to Ranbir canal.
The canal enters into close vicinity of international boundary in area of responsibility. During last many years, large amount of silt had gathered inside canal which resulted in huge blocks in canal system and flow of water was restricted. Due to which optimum use of irrigation facility could not be utilized. Farmers in the region were also constantly approaching UT government for desilting work in canal.
The irrigation and flood control department of J&K approached BSF authorities for assistance in desilting work in the canal ahead of Border and in close vicinity of border. Despite huge apprehension of firing by Pakistan to thwart the work, BSF timely help to the J & K Government was made in the best interest of Farmers. The work was taken up in the Arnia and R S Pura Sector under the supervision of senior officers with full proof security to civil staff working ahead of fence. The work was completed in record time. Pak Rangers objected to the work and also adopted aggressive posture but the deft and tactical handling of situation led to successful completion of work. The locals are very happy about the work as It will immensely benefit farmers in Jammu district.
