  • Women in Politics: Breaking Barriers in J&K Assembly

The recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir marked a historic moment with the election of three women among 90 members—Shagun Parihar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Shamima Firdous and Sakina Itoo from the National Conference (NC). While their representation remains at 3.33%, their victories symbolize a significant step toward gender inclusivity in politics.

  • Shagun Parihar (BJP, Kishtwar): A research scholar with an MTech in electrical power systems, Parihar’s win is a story of resilience, especially after her father and uncle were killed by terrorists in 2018. Her journey from academia to politics showcases her commitment to serving the people of Kishtwar.
  • Shamima Firdous (NC, Habbakadal): A senior NC leader and former chairperson of the State Commission for Women, Firdous made a powerful comeback to the assembly with a decisive victory.
  • Sakina Itoo (NC, DH Pora): A veteran leader and former minister, Itoo secured a landslide victory, reinforcing her influence in South Kashmir’s political landscape.

These women have paved the way for future generations, proving that leadership knows no gender.

J&K’s Sports Icons: Defying Odds, Inspiring Generations

  • Tajamul Islam: The Kickboxing Champion on a Mission

A two-time World Kickboxing Champion from Bandipora, Tajamul Islam has been breaking stereotypes since the age of six. After winning gold for India in Italy, she has taken up the mission of empowering young girls in Kashmir with self-defense training, ensuring they grow up strong and confident.

  • Nadiya Nighat: Kashmir’s First Female Football Coach

Born in Rambagh, Srinagar, Nadiya Nighat defied societal norms to pursue her love for football. Despite minimal encouragement, she earned 10 national and state-level awards and now runs her own football academy, training the next generation of female footballers in Kashmir.

  • Sheetal Devi: The Armless Archer Who Redefined Possibility

Perhaps one of the most inspiring athletes of our time, Sheetal Devi from Kishtwar was born with phocomelia, a rare condition that left her without arms. But she didn’t let that stop her. Supported by the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles, she trained as a para-archer and, in just two seasons, made global headlines with her remarkable achievements. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination.

  • A New Dawn for Women in J&K

As J&K moves forward, these women—whether in politics, sports, or grassroots activism—serve as beacons of hope and inspiration. Their journeys, marked by struggles and triumphs, remind us of the limitless potential of women when given the right opportunities.

This International Women’s Day, Jammu and Kashmir celebrates not just these extraordinary women but every woman who continues to challenge norms and make her mark in history.
