Jammu: The Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu has come under sharp criticism after girl students staged a protest highlighting the deplorable condition of toilets in university hostels, accusing the administration of ignoring repeated complaints.
The girl students, led by ABVP activist Jayavardhani Singh Parihar, gathered outside the Girls Hostel in the evening, raising slogans against the university administration and demanding immediate action.
Speaking to the media, the students alleged that hostel washrooms are choked, unhygienic and covered with algae and fungal growth, making them unfit for use and posing serious health risks.
The protestors claimed that the poor sanitation has already begun affecting students’ health, warning of worsening conditions if urgent steps are not taken.
Students alleged that despite submitting multiple memorandums to hostel authorities and approaching the Vice Chancellor, no concrete action has been taken so far.
They also claimed that the hostel Provost has not visited the premises to assess the situation.
The issue of restricted access to the Dhanvantari Library also surfaced, with students questioning why girls are required to return by 8:30 PM despite the library remaining open till midnight.
Reacting to the administration’s reported reasoning citing safety concerns, the protestors said that ensuring campus safety is the administration’s responsibility, not a ground to restrict students.
The students warned that if their grievances are not addressed immediately, they will intensify their protest in the coming days.
The protest ended peacefully, but the spotlight now firmly rests on the university administration and the Vice Chancellor’s office to respond to the growing concerns over student welfare.
