Srinagar, Apr 09: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that lasting peace in the Middle East would depend largely on the United States using its influence over Israel to uphold the ceasefire. He expressed the view that the present conflict had been forced upon Iran rather than initiated by it.

Speaking to journalists during an event in Srinagar, the Chief Minister raised concerns about the growing tensions in the region, especially the situation involving Israel and Lebanon. He stated that the success or failure of the ceasefire would hinge on how effectively global powers, particularly the US, manage the situation and prevent further escalation.

Abdullah also criticized the communication style of US President Donald Trump, saying that frequent shifts in statements create uncertainty. He remarked that the language used by world leaders should reflect responsibility and stability, adding that such rhetoric can influence global perceptions and reactions.

Questioning the overall outcome of the conflict, he said that wars should have clearly defined objectives and measurable results. He further observed that India’s close diplomatic ties with Israel might have reduced its scope to act as a neutral mediator in the crisis, noting that different diplomatic dynamics could have allowed New Delhi to play a more active role in peace efforts.

In a separate development, the Chief Minister announced that 90 individuals had been provided government jobs across 10 districts in Kashmir under SRO-43 provisions. He emphasized that offering such appointments is an obligation of the administration toward affected families and not an act of generosity.

Addressing environmental concerns, Abdullah acknowledged that several water bodies in the region have shrunk over time due to various pressures, including climate change and human activity. He stressed that safeguarding lakes and wetlands would require coordinated action from government agencies as well as community participation.

On the issue of women’s reservation, the Chief Minister said his party supports the concept but questioned the delay in implementing the legislation introduced in 2024. He called on the government to clarify its position and timeline before seeking broader political backing.
