Jammu: The long-awaited Udhampur Airport project has moved a step closer to reality, with Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announcing that the tender for construction of the airport terminal building has already been floated and the work is likely to be awarded in the second week of August.
Sharing the update on X on Sunday, Dr Singh said the technical bids will be opened on July 10, while the financial bids are expected to be opened on July 22.
“Airport Terminal Building construction tender already floated. The work may be awarded for construction of the terminal in the second week of August,” the Union Minister said.
The development marks a significant milestone in the establishment of the airport, which is expected to substantially improve air connectivity for the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Once operational, the Udhampur Airport, along with the proposed airport at Kishtwar, is expected to provide affordable air travel under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, making air connectivity accessible to residents of remote and mountainous areas.
The improved connectivity is also expected to boost tourism, trade and economic activity across the region. Udhampur and Kishtwar, known for their scenic landscapes, religious destinations and adventure tourism potential, attract thousands of visitors every year.
The UDAN scheme, launched by the Government of India, aims to enhance regional air connectivity by linking underserved and unserved airports across the country. Under the scheme, a part of the airfare is subsidised through viability gap funding, making air travel more affordable for passengers while encouraging airlines to operate on regional routes.
With the terminal construction process now underway, the Udhampur Airport project has entered a crucial phase, raising hopes that the long-pending demand for better air connectivity in the region will soon become a reality.
