Kathmandu, September 4: Two workers trapped inside a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Nepal have been rescued alive, 10 days after the devastating Bhotekohi flash floods.

The rescued workers have been identified as 45-year-old Kabir Maharjan and 30-year-old Sanjay Sah. According to the Public Relations Directorate of the Nepal Army, Maharjan was serving as a mechanical supervisor at the project, while Sah was working as a foreman.

The rescue operation was led by the Nepal Army security command, which used specialised equipment to reach the trapped workers.

The breakthrough came after rescuers detected voices coming from inside the tunnel and managed to establish communication with people believed to be trapped there, according to a report by The Kathmandu Post.

Following the discovery, the Nepali Army and Armed Police Force stepped up their efforts to reach the workers and bring them out safely.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the flash floods in Nepal climbed to 1,282 on Friday.

The disaster was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26. The resulting flash floods caused widespread destruction across towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.

According to Nepal Police, 359 bodies have been recovered in Chitwan, 218 in Nawalparasi East, 208 in Nawalparasi West, 185 in Nuwakot, 72 in Gorkha, 60 in Dhading, 140 in Rasuwa and 38 in Tanahu.

The death toll rose further after two people died while receiving treatment at two hospitals in Kathmandu, taking the overall number of fatalities to 1,282.
