Sanasar, Patnitop, Bhaderwah among new tourism hubs in Jammu’s revival drive

VIKRAM SHARMA

JAMMU: In a strategic push to boost tourism in the Jammu division, the Tourism Department has initiated plans to develop lesser-known but breathtaking destinations such as Baradari, Bhaderwah, Sanasar, and others into full-fledged tourism hubs.

The goal is to place Jammu on the national and international tourism map with the same appeal that Kashmir commands.

The department is now shifting its focus to hidden gems in the region—Baradari in Reasi, Ranjit Sagar Lake in Kathua, Sanasar in Ramban, Bhaderwah in Doda, and Patnitop in Udhampur. These destinations are not only rich in natural beauty but also ideal for adventure and cultural tourism.

In Reasi, river rafting on the Chenab River is emerging as a major attraction, with Baradari serving as the starting point and guides readily available.

Meanwhile, Kathua’s Basohli region, known for its exquisite paintings and handicrafts, is being prepared for a cultural revival through local fairs and festivals. The department also plans to introduce floating jetties on Ranjit Sagar Lake to enhance the lake’s tourism appeal.

Sanasar, located in the Ramban district, is being developed as an adventure hub with activities such as paragliding and trekking, along with new facilities like homestays and camping grounds. Similarly, Bhaderwah—often referred to as “Mini Kashmir”—is attracting attention for its scenic beauty and local delicacies like Bhaderwahi Rajma-Chawal. The department envisions Bhaderwah as a future tourism powerhouse.

Patnitop, already a favorite among locals, is also part of the plan, with targeted efforts to draw tourists from outside Jammu. In addition, Suchetgarh, located near the Line of Control, is being revived for border tourism. Previously affected by tension along the border, the area is now witnessing a return of tourists.

With a renewed interest among travelers in exploring offbeat destinations, this initiative aims to diversify tourism in the Jammu division. The Tourism Department is not only enhancing infrastructure but also creating livelihood opportunities for local communities through homestays, guide services, and cultural activities.

These efforts are designed to make lesser-known places around Jammu as popular and accessible as those in Kashmir, ensuring that visitors have a rich and varied experience.
