Jammu: Tension gripped Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Jammu on Thursday evening after a man suspected of drug peddling was killed in police firing during an operation in the Phallian Mandal area.
The incident triggered protests, forcing the administration to deploy CRPF and J&K Police personnel at the hospital to maintain law and order.
According to sources, the police were chasing two suspected drug peddlers near Surre Chak under Satwari Police Station limits.
Preliminary reports suggest that the suspects opened fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory firing. In the ensuing crossfire, one of the suspects, identified as Parvez alias Bachi, son of Rehmat Ali from Belicharana, was killed.
His associate sustained injuries and was admitted to GMC Jammu for treatment. Another person was reportedly detained.
A senior police officer confirmed that the action was based on credible inputs of narcotics smuggling.
He stated that the suspects attempted to escape, leading to the exchange of gunfire. However, as the news of Parvez’s death spread, members of his community gathered at the hospital, accusing the police of killing him in cold blood and wrongly branding him a drug smuggler.
Amid rising tension, authorities immediately deployed CRPF and police teams around the hospital to prevent any untoward incident. Responding to the public outcry, the administration appointed the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jammu as the inquiry officer to investigate the matter.
To ensure transparency, a medical board was constituted to conduct the postmortem, and Executive Magistrate Bitty Singh was directed to supervise the entire process and submit a report. The administration has assured a fair and impartial inquiry into the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.
