Jammu, July 31: The Supreme Court has disposed of the divorce case of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after he and his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah, informed the court that they had reached an amicable settlement.
A Bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe accepted the settlement after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Omar Abdullah, told the court that both parties had resolved all issues and requested that the divorce be granted. The court agreed and closed the case.
The matrimonial dispute had been pending since 2016, when Omar Abdullah filed for divorce, citing the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage and alleging cruelty. His plea was earlier dismissed by the family court and later by the Delhi High Court, following which he approached the Supreme Court.
In August 2024, the apex court referred the matter for mediation at the request of both sides. The mediation process continued into 2025 and ultimately resulted in a settlement. Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah were married in 1994 and have been living separately since 2009.
