Businessman rescued after gunpoint abduction

Sumit Sharma

Jammu: Tension gripped parts of Jammu on Thursday following two separate incidents—one involving the detention of five Rohingyas by the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Bathindi, and another in which a local businessman was abducted at gunpoint from his office in Satwari before being rescued by locals.

In the first incident, sleuths of the SOG, a specialised anti-militancy unit of Jammu and Kashmir Police, apprehended five Rohingyas from Bathindi area on the basis of inputs linking them to suspected subversive activities.

The detainees have been identified as Abu Umar, son of Mohammad; Ansar Miya, son of Ghulam Hussain, a resident of Kargil Colony; Mohammad Jamil, son of Ahmad Nesar, a resident of Kalu Plot; Mohammad Eliyas, son of Tazul Moluk, currently residing near Channi Police Line; and Noor Hussain alias Ebrahim, son of Mohammad Khalil, a resident of Rajeev Nagar. All of them are reportedly UNHCR ID card holders.

While officials have not disclosed specific charges, sources said they were taken for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into their activities.

Meanwhile, a shocking incident unfolded in Satwari where a businessman was allegedly fired upon and abducted from his office.

The victim, Fateh Singh of Chatha Farm, stated in his police complaint that an individual, identified as Dharamveer Singh, forcibly entered his office armed with an illegal pistol.

Without provocation, he began threatening Singh, fired a shot that struck the wall, and physically dragged him out. Singh was then forced into a vehicle and taken to the accused’s residence, where he was beaten.

His cries for help drew the attention of local residents, who intervened and managed to rescue him.

Based on the victim’s statement, police have registered an FIR (No. 140/2025) at Police Station Satwari under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Arms Act. The accused is being pursued by law enforcement.

Both incidents have sparked serious concern across Jammu. While the apprehension of Rohingyas has renewed discussions around illegal immigration and internal security, the daylight abduction of a businessman has raised questions about safety and law enforcement response in urban areas. Police investigations into both cases are ongoing.
