SRINAGAR, June 2: Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Education and Health Sakina Itoo on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on PDP chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, accusing her of prioritizing political power over the interests of the people and holding her responsible for key developments that reshaped the region’s political landscape.
Speaking to the media, Itoo alleged that Mufti repeatedly placed political considerations above broader public interests. She claimed that during the collapse of the PDP-BJP coalition government, National Conference leader Dr. Farooq Abdullah had extended support to Mufti without demanding ministerial positions or any share in power. However, she alleged that the offer was not accepted.
The National Conference leader argued that the PDP’s partnership with the BJP proved politically costly for Jammu and Kashmir, linking it to subsequent developments including the revocation of Article 370, the removal of Article 35A, and the conversion of the former state into a Union Territory.
Itoo further maintained that attempts were made after 2019 to build a united political platform involving various parties, but alleged that Mehbooba Mufti did not actively participate in those efforts. She accused the PDP chief of being focused on regaining political influence rather than working collectively on issues affecting the region.
Turning to recent demolition drives, the minister questioned what she described as selective action against economically weaker sections. She asked why influential individuals allegedly occupying large tracts of land were not facing similar measures and called for equal treatment under the law.
Emphasizing her party’s agenda, Itoo said the National Conference would continue advocating for the restoration of statehood and the protection of Jammu and Kashmir’s political identity and constitutional rights. The remarks come amid continuing political debate over the region’s future and the impact of decisions taken in recent years.
