JAMMU: After over a week of intense heatwave conditions, residents across Jammu and Kashmir finally breathed a sigh of relief as temperatures dipped below normal on Monday. The Meteorological Department has forecast a fresh spell of rain and thunderstorms over the coming days, bringing respite from the sweltering conditions.
According to the MeT department, brief spells of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are likely at isolated to scattered places across J&K till June 20. A yellow alert has been issued for the region, cautioning people about isolated lightning, strong winds, and potential heavy showers.
From June 21 to 23, a more active weather system is expected to impact the Union Territory, with generally cloudy skies and intermittent rain and thundershowers predicted in several areas.
In the last 24 hours, parts of the Jammu region experienced fairly widespread light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds. Jammu city alone recorded 46.0 mm of rainfall, offering much-needed relief after days of relentless heat.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director, MeT Department, confirmed that weather conditions are expected to remain unstable for the next several days. “Intermittent spells of rain and thundershower are likely between June 21 and 23. Farmers are advised to continue their operations cautiously,” he said.
Despite the rainfall, both day and night temperatures have remained above normal in many areas, especially in Kashmir. However, the recent rain has pulled maximum temperatures below seasonal averages across most stations.
On Monday, Srinagar recorded a pleasant 25.2°C, while Jammu registered 32.3°C. Other recorded maximums include Qazigund (22.8°C), Pahalgam (20.2°C), Kupwara (25.0°C), Kokernag (21.4°C), and Gulmarg (17.0°C) in the Kashmir region. In Jammu division, Banihal recorded 21.4°C, Katra 29.9°C, Batote 23.1°C, and Bhaderwah 23.6°C.
Night temperatures were also reported to be above normal, with Gulmarg recording the lowest at 11.6°C in Kashmir and Banihal at 15.6°C in Jammu division.
As weather conditions improve, residents and farmers alike are hopeful for continued respite from extreme weather and a stable monsoon pattern ahead.
