Srinagar: The ruling National Conference (NC) is planning to introduce the Land Grant Bill 2025 in the upcoming Budget session, which is set to resume on March 27 in Jammu, aiming to restore land rights to the economically weaker sections.

Party spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq described the legislation as “very important” for reversing changes made in 2022 that, he said, “affected the land rights of the poor”.

“There are many bills. In the session after this, there will be government bills and private members’ bills. In that, I have a very important bill, Land Grant Act 2025,” Sadiq told reporters.

He alleged that the Act concerns land belonging to economically weaker sections and stressed the need to reverse earlier changes.

“It is very important. It takes the land of poor people. And the amendment that took place in 2022, we have to give back the land of poor people, to give back their rights,” he said.

In the last Assembly session in October, the J&K government had rejected the land grants bill moved by the People’s Democratic Party, Waheed Parra.

NC leader Sadiq added that several other bills by members will also be taken up during the session.

When asked about any bill on alcohol in the upcoming session, Sadiq said he was in personally in favour of ban.

“If you ask me personally, alcohol should be banned. I wish that when there was a PDP government, there was a bill at that time, and the finance minister at that time said that we cannot ban this. I wish there was a ban at that time. Then we would not have to struggle so much in this,” the NC leader said.

Sadiq said that India should play a role in de-escalating the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, warning that the conflict is already impacting the daily lives of common people.

He said rising fuel prices and essential costs are a growing concern amid the conflict.

Sadiq cautioned that a prolonged conflict could worsen the situation.

“If this war continues for another week, then all the everyday things will be affected. And especially the common people, the poor people, will suffer the most,” Sadiq added.

Expressing hope for an early resolution, he stressed the need for peace. “We still hope that this war ends. Peace should come everywhere,” he said.

Highlighting India’s diplomatic position, Sadiq said New Delhi is well placed to intervene. “India should also play its role. Because it has good relations with both countries. If it is able to help end this war somehow, it will be a big thing in today’s time,” he said. (Agencies)Kashmir Local News
