SRINAGAR, May 18:Haji Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, father of jailed Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid, passed away late Sunday night after a prolonged illness, family sources said.
According to sources, he had been unwell for the past several days and was initially undergoing treatment in Srinagar before being shifted to AIIMS Delhi for advanced medical care after his condition deteriorated. However, he breathed his last despite efforts by doctors.
The demise was confirmed by Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, who expressed grief over the loss and said the party leadership and workers stand in solidarity with the bereaved family during this difficult time.
The AIP also appreciated the doctors and medical staff of SMHS Hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital Srinagar, and AIIMS Delhi for their care and support during his treatment.
Following his death, the party appealed to the authorities to allow Engineer Rashid to attend the funeral rites on humanitarian grounds.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail to Engineer Rashid to enable him to participate in the last rites of his father.
Engineer Rashid has been lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail since 2019 after being arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a 2017 alleged terror-funding case.
