Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir is set to experience a significant change in weather conditions as a strong Western Disturbance approaches the region.
Speaking to The News Now Dr. Mukhtar, Director In-Charge, Srinagar, the active weather system is expected to impact the Union Territory from the evening of February 25 until February 28.
Dr. Mukhtar stated that the main activity will be concentrated in North, Central, and South Kashmir, with isolated heavy snowfall in higher reaches.
“The intensity and spread of the disturbance will gradually increase, peaking on February 27 and 28,” he explained.
The upper regions of South Kashmir and areas like Chenab Valley are expected to witness heavy to very heavy snowfall.
Moderate snowfall is anticipated in the plains of North and South Kashmir, while Jammu’s plains, including the city, are likely to experience thunderstorm activity and heavy rain. This spell is expected to be the first major weather event of the season, bringing significant snow accumulation in higher altitudes and widespread rainfall in lower areas.
The IMD has warned that the snowfall and rain could disrupt connectivity on major highways, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, Mughal Road, and other mountain passes like Sadhna Pass, Razdan Pass, and Zojila. Visibility issues and temporary road closures are expected for 3-4 days until the weather system subsides.
Dr. Mukhtar further noted that this weather event might partially reduce the current precipitation deficit, which has persisted since October. However, he emphasized that more such spells are required to overcome the overall deficit.
