Jammu: In preparation for the annual Amarnath Yatra, which begins on July 3, authorities have implemented unprecedented security and logistical arrangements to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.
So far, more than 3.31 lakh devotees have registered for the 38-day pilgrimage, which will conclude on August 9, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.
Heightened security measures come in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local resident. Nearly 50,000 CRPF personnel, in addition to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, will be deployed along the two designated routes—Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal. Surveillance drones, bomb disposal squads, canine teams, and plainclothes marshals in buses will be part of the elaborate security setup.
The CRPF troops, equipped with satellite phones and supported by quick action teams, will provide convoy escorts and maintain a strict vigil on movement through the national highway.
All convoy vehicles and pilgrims will be tagged with radio frequency identification (RFID) to enable real-time tracking of their journey.
The enhanced security grid also includes road opening duties to detect and neutralize improvised explosive devices (IEDs), quick response forces at strategic locations, and signal jammers on convoys.
Additionally, CRPF is already guarding critical infrastructure like the Chenab and Anji rail bridges. Joint police control rooms will be set up along the yatra routes to ensure seamless coordination among different security agencies, while mountain rescue teams will be stationed to aid pilgrims in distress.
The 49th Board meeting of the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB), chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, reviewed the comprehensive preparations for the yatra. The meeting, held at Raj Bhawan, discussed arrangements at base camps and along the routes, with a focus on improving essential amenities and infrastructure. The LG stressed the importance of completing all pending works on time and reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring a safe, smooth, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage experience for all devotees.
