JAMMU, July 21: Continuous heavy rainfall triggered fresh landslides and mudslides at several places along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), disrupting traffic and prompting authorities to launch restoration work at vulnerable stretches.
Officials said intense rain in Udhampur and Ramban districts caused mudslides and shooting stones on the uphill section of the highway, especially near Sharda Mata Mandir and Thara, making travel unsafe and hampering traffic movement.
Teams from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), traffic police and other departments were immediately pressed into service to clear the debris and restore normal traffic. Commuters have been advised to check the latest traffic updates before starting their journey.
In a separate incident, a landslide occurred in the Nograta Saldhar area of Rajouri district after continuous rainfall, disrupting local road connectivity. Officials said no loss of life or injuries had been reported.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall across several districts of the Jammu region, cautioning that thunderstorms, lightning, flash floods and landslides could occur in vulnerable areas.
